About Sansuien

Introduction

A ryokan featuring gardens and hot springs, nestled in the town of Kochi.

At the foot of Kochi Castle, a special place where history and nature intertwine. Sansuien is a hot spring inn situated on grounds associated with the lords of the Tosa Domain.

The inn’s name derives from the “greenery” of Fudeyama, where the tombs of the successive lords of the Tosa Domain, the Yamauchi family, are located.
The “green” of the Kagami River, selected as one of the “100 Famous Waters of the Heisei Era.” The “green” of the Japanese garden within Sansuien’s expansive grounds.
The inn was named “Sansuien” in reference to these three beautiful shades of green.

A place associated with the lords of the Tosa Domain,
—an inn where history comes alive.

The site of Sansuien once housed the secondary residence of the Yamauchi family, lords of the Tosa Domain. Retaining the charm of the feudal era, this space harmoniously blends history and modernity, offering visitors a quiet moment to reflect on the passage of time. Inside the facility, there is a gallery dedicated to Kazutoyo Yamauchi and his wife, allowing visitors to enjoy a journey that feels like a stroll through history.

A garden that reveals its beauty throughout the changing seasons.

The gardens of Sansui-en are a historic site where, in the late Edo period, Takamori Saigo visited Kochi as an envoy of the Satsuma Domain to hold the “Four Lords’ Conference”—a meeting to plot the overthrow of Tokugawa Yoshinobu—and met with Yodo Yamauchi, the lord of the Tosa Domain, at the Monomi-tei pavilion.Furthermore, the Japanese garden is majestically adorned by a mulberry tree estimated to be 600 years old, Japanese cypresses donated by feudal lords from across the country during the feudal era, and black and red pines planted to commemorate Emperor Shōwa’s imperial visit.
